Cloning and terrorism are ethical bedfellows, according to the president of LifeCanada. "Both share the same premise," says Peter Ryan. "You can use human life as a means to a perceived higher goal."
Ryan was commenting on the announcement today that scientists have cloned a human embryo for the first time.
"This is a sad day for both science and humanity," says Ryan. "Scientific invention is not inherently good. The atomic bomb was no gift to humanity. Neither is the production and destruction of a tiny human being solely for experimental purposes. In fact, it is much more sinister. It is science gone mad, as well as a degradation of humanity.
"As a society we must decide: either human life is intrinsically sacred, or it is only so much raw material to use for whatever purpose - scientific, medical, ideological, etc. - we may want. We cannot straddle the fence. If cloning is OK, you can't turn around and say that terrorism is necessarily wrong."
