Pope John Paul II, speaking to the youth of the world in St. Peter's Square on April 8, 2001 when he presented the World Youth Day Cross to 47 Canadian youth.

" I greet the young Canadians present, led by the Archbishop of Toronto, Cardinal Ambrozic, and to them I entrust the Cross. I encourage you to prepare well for the next important appointment of World Youth Day, which has as its theme "You are the salt of the earth . You are the light of the world" (Mt 5:13-14)....May this Cross strengthen your faith and guide you in preparation for your feast. It is my wish that the Canadian soil become a place where the hearts of many young people are renewed so that they become the salt for the earth and light for the world."
