Educational Groups Launch the 2006 National Advertising Campaign

October is “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” and many activities and events are planned to create awareness about the deadly disease all across the country.

However, once again, politics trumps women’s health as the overwhelming evidence of a proven link between abortion and a woman’s increased risk of breast cancer receives no acknowledgement from the very organizations who claim to care about women’s health. None of the various pro-abortion groups or cancer organizations in Canada will bypass the politics to put women first by at least admitting the link. With most women very concerned about their risk of breast cancer (1 in 9 women contract the disease), those seeking abortion should at least be informed of the greatly heightened risk of breast cancer associated with the procedure.

Last year, LifeCanada launched an abortion/breast cancer awareness campaign.  Billboards and bus ads were sponsored by local pro-life groups across the country in an effort to bring awareness to the proven link between abortion and breast cancer.  A total of 38 billboards and transit ads were displayed across the country.

The ad simply read, “Stop the Cover-up” along with the website, “www.abortionbreastcancer.ca.”   The campaign was a success as it generated a lot of media attention and thousands of visitors to the website. Although much of the media coverage was negative, each time the media reported on the ad campaign, hundreds of people logged on to the website to view the information for themselves.  In fact during the months of October and November we had 3,656 unique visitors, a total of 117,540 hits and 16,284 pages were viewed.  The ad campaign was strictly an educational project and we could not have reached so many people with this important message without the media’s help.

This year, we will have 24 billboards and bus ads displayed across the country with one of the two messages featured in this article.   Also, many local groups will run these ads in their local newspapers.

Not everyone is convinced of the link between abortion and breast cancer. In fact, the various cancer organizations throughout Canada all deny the link, including the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF).  President Jim Hudson called the website “misleading,” despite the scientific evidence that is indisputable and mounting. Not only are there sound biological explanations and animal research that support the link, but fully 80% of the 70 epidemiological studies conducted thus far show that one abortion is a statistically significant factor in raising a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer, a disease that is now afflicting one in nine women in Canada.

CBCF’s own website states, “when an activity raises threats of harm to human health or the environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause-and-effect relationships are not fully established scientifically.” Yet in the face of scientifically established information the CBCF chooses to remain silent on the proven link between abortion and a woman’s increased risk of breast cancer, thereby jeopardizing the lives and health of women.

Life Canada’s President, Joanne Byfield, noted that if science and the well-being of women are not enough to motivate the cancer establishment, perhaps lawsuits will. There have been two court cases in the United States and one in Australia that have ruled in favour of the women who had not been warned.

Women who are pregnant need to be informed that when they opt for abortion over childbirth, they lose the protective effect of their full-term pregnancy and raise their risk of breast cancer. To better understand the science and for more information on the research, please refer to our website abortionbreastcancer.ca.

We are simply asking that women be told the truth.
