"Fertility Deficit" in 20 Years

Dear Editor:
I found it curious that, among the reasons given for Canada's projected fertility deficit, no mention was made of the statistical impact of birth prevention by induced abortion.
As the article notes, deaths are going to outnumber births because our birth rate is 1.52 children per woman as of 1999, well below the level of 2.1 demographers say is needed for population replacement. Canada's abortion rate (1997-99) is about one per 3 live births (32 per 100 according to Stats Canada). Without abortion our birth rate would be about 2.0 children per woman. In other words, if children already conceived were simply allowed to live, we would not need to be concerned over future levels of fertility.
Sincerely,
Peter Ryan, President
