In 2001, Statistics Canada reported 883 abortions in Newfoundland. Taxpayers pay the full cost of hospital and clinic abortions. There is one private abortion clinic in the province.
Nova Scotia
There were 1,890 abortions performed in Nova Scotia in 2001. Taxpayers pay the full cost of hospital abortions. There are no private abortion clinics. The Morgentaler clinic closed its doors in 2003.
Prince Edward Island
There were 174 abortions performed on women from PEI in 2001. However, no hospitals in the province perform abortions. Women who want abortions must leave the province. Taxpayers pay the cost of abortions in out-of-province hospitals if the procedure is determined to be medically necessary by a doctor in PEI. These must be pre-authorized and approved. A spokesman for PEI's health department says there are about 10 such abortions approved each year. Clinic abortions are not paid for.
New Brunswick
Statistics Canada reported 1,028 abortions in New Brunswick in 2001. Taxpayers pay the full cost of hospital abortions. They do not pay any of the costs of abortions performed at the Morgentaler Clinic in Fredericton. Henry Morgentaler is suing the province to have taxpayers pay the full cost of abortions performed at his for-profit clinic.
Quebec
There were 31,065 abortions reported to Statistics Canada in 2001. Taxpayers pay the full cost of hospital abortions and part of the cost at private clinics. There are five abortion clinics in Quebec.
Ontario
There were 38,827 abortions reported in Ontario in 2001. Taxpayers pay the full cost of hospital and clinic abortions. There are six private abortion clinics in the province.
Manitoba
There were 3,375 abortions performed in 2001 according to Statistic Canada. Manitoba taxpayers pay the full cost of hospital abortions. They also pay the physician fee but not the facility fee at the province's one private abortion clinic.
Saskatchewan
There were 1,900 abortions performed in the province in 2001. Taxpayers pay the full cost of hospital abortions. There are no private clinics in Saskatchewan.
Alberta
There were 10,603 abortions performed in Alberta in 2001 according to Statistics Canada. Taxpayers pay the full cost of abortions in hospitals and in the province's two private, for-profit clinics.
British Columbia
Statistics Canada reported 15,908 abortions performed in B.C. in 2001. Taxpayers pay the full cost of all hospital and clinic abortions. There are three private abortion clinics in B.C.
Yukon
There were 122 abortions reported in 2001 in the Yukon. Taxpayers pay for hospital abortions. There are no private clinics in the Yukon but the province pays part of the cost for women to have an abortion at a B.C. clinic.
Northwest Territories
There were 286 abortions in the NWT in 2001. Taxpayers pay the full cost of hospital abortions. There are no private clinics in the NWT.
Nunavit
Statistics Canada reported 148 abortions in 2001 in Nunavit. Taxpayers pay the full cost of hospital abortions and the travel expenses of women to go to Ottawa or Montreal for abortions. As of 2003, there were no doctors in Nunavit who performed abortions.
